Hellos, long time know write.

I'm still scribbling/blogging away, carrying on the theme of vintage, retro, design/art, new collection finds, and a passion for creativity - i'll be posting about them all and more, over at the blog for Jamboree - a shop based in Whitley Bay, Newcastle upon Tyne, home to my crafty creations, mixed in with vintage, unusual stock for the shop my parents own. I've taken on running the blog, I hope you'll join us :)

Our latest blog has a new theme - Friday finds, I'll be posting each Friday, a discovery that i've add to my collection, based on vintage and kitsch, the good, the bad and the unusual :)

I think I can understand the mixed feelings towards the cat moulded lipsticks, one site had a poll with results steaming a head with love of the new from Paul and Joe Autumn/Winter Sparkles Limited edition collection cat lipsticks. Whilst a fair few people were creeped out by the cat faces. All thought i'm verging more to the cute, and realistically i'd probably not use it, keep it in the collection ;) with such cute names as Clair de Lune, Over the Moon and Moon Shadow - Over the moon/ middle shade would be on my list. Inspired by designer Sophie Albou love of cats with more of the range on Paul & Joe's website. The brand never fails to have the prettiest, vintage inspired goodies, that I'd love to adorn my make shift dressing table, hopefully one of these days.

My quest continues for the red lipstick, thank you girls for your suggestions <3, i'll be sure to find them tomorrow, if all fails I'm heading to Illamasqua stand, adore their bold unique shades, and the ultimate matte lipstick which I adore and if failing my mission shall weep upon their goodies and comfort myself lol.

In Boots today found a little bargain, I was hoping the nautical but nice! kit might pop up for sale after the promotion, as I missed out, I think the cosmetic goddesses liked me today and granted my wish.
In the past picked up another Boots make up set which had been a past promotion - always worth keeping an eye out and bag a bargain - this little tin will set you back only £1.50! love the vintage vibe to this little tin - have to <3 bargains, only wish i'd maybe bought two? the eye shadow is usually £3.49 and nail varnish around £2.99. I picked this up in a larger Boots, a full stand of them couldn't believe it.

I've sent myself another mission, for some reason i'd love a emerald green nail varnish, reminiscent of the peacock green, love the lustre tones on their wings. So far the regular high street brands are telling me i'm to a dead end - to soon to reach for the tissues? If you have spotted one on your travels please let me know fashionista's ;) The Barry M nail varnish is near, but i'd love a shade more bold, hint darker, yet still vibrant, confusing I know.

My quest continues since March!!! oh, dear never imagined it was that long ago - was it really? for my original post I've had know luck in tracking down that shade. And just recently Drew Barrymore had a similar gorgeous shade for the premiere of Going The Distance in London.

I found one shade from Barry M, but had a plum amethyst under tone to the lipstick, slight glossy. I love matte finish, or not to glossy. But, it was 100% spot on.

So long summer

You know that feeling, you see oodles of fab items in magazines and in store, yet you have zero £$. And so, you scrimp, save and possibly borrow, even accept that penny with the piece of fluffy from down the back of the sofa. And, then *sigh* the possibility of gorgeous goodies has *poofed* as though they never existed.

I'm being prepared, not to be disappointed from magazine features, that when you actually get to the store, the item either has sold out, & they ran the feature to late, or it just doesn't look as good as you had hoped.

I had my eye on a bag from Miss Selfridge (Horse crossbody bag Price: £25.00), and though I liked it at the shop after seeing it online - just didn't think it was practical for every day use.

So, venturing into New Look I spotted a red bag, and on getting home discovered a booklet of vouchers for September. I have my eye on these boots, those vouchers are their to tempt me, and it will probably work :)

£19.99 They aren't quiet as vivid as pictured here, but a lovely change from just black. It saddens me a little when the Autumn colours arrive in store. Not everyone likes to be head to toe in darker tones, if anything we need more colour through the darker months. The downside of fashion boots are, like this pair, and a previous pair I had from New Look - the sole wore down to fast, after a few months which I think it ridiculous I know they are just seasonal updates, but you expect a little better and not have to invest in re-heeling or new sole.

Next is the bag I ended up buying, preferring a bag that is crossbody, and the mini pockets are always handy, especially for the amount of bits and pieces I seem to collect from goodness knows where - matched with the possibility of collecting new treasures on travels :)

I thought I can always add my own embellishments maybe. The bag is also available in tan, white and dark brown to.

I saw some amazing patient black heel shoe/boots, with gold studs/laces. I can't find them online sadly.

Accessorize/Monson know how to tempt, imagine teal/ dark turquoise ballet flat, with a corsage of the same colour and nestled in the centre of the flower a beautiful jewel. Another site that doesn't feature all their tootsie shoes sadly. I would have adored those shoes, but another pair of flats? their are enough pairs breading here already lol.

This next ring falls under the category of looked gorg in the email, sadly not as divine in the shop.

I haven't ventured into Newcastle for a while, and so need my Accessories fix, I was naughty and treated myself to some earrings after saving some pennies on the bag purchase.

I thought these were so cute - the enamel heart caught my eye first, and just checking out the website I see their is a matching brooch which I missed in store. I love clouds, trying to figure out why I like them so much, a sense of calm maybe, graceful movement.

Did you look for images formed within clouds to? I know as kids we did, and I still do to be honest.

I've set myself the mammoth task of culling photos, I love organizing items/photos. If only id edited along the way - anyone else do the same? You never know if that shot with a blurred pigeon, trying to hide that dodgy chin angle, or 5 of the same shot just might be useful one day - NOT! lol.
My computer is well due a very late spring clean. I keep meaning to buy a USB stick - do you have any recommendations?

Home Jeeves! Love the cherry red - parked outside of The Land of Green Ginger - Tynemouth.

Amaryllis - I thought I'd photograph the flowers, also a good task for testing out the features on my camera, I love just playing with the options, rather then digest a whole instructions book, especially since I don't know where the box has gone ;). But, was very surprised, a little freaked out at this image. One flower head and already shrivelled, but to my surprise the form it had created was the serpent like face, peeking over the full Amaryllis flower. Guardian of the flowers perhaps? yikes!

When it comes to place name my memory becomes a sieve - visually if you were to say, the village with the wonky tree, that looks like a monkey. I'd surly remember.

Same location as the image above. Loved the postage stamp cushions, shame they were oodles of pounds. But I have a confession, I don't really like cushions, find them a bit irritating and cumbersome.

Recent projects

Once again inspired by the Twilight Saga - Eclipse necklace - I'm on the hunt for charms to compliment the white chess piece for Breaking Dawn which is in the pipeline. I still can't believe how they have spread out the two remanding films - will anyone care by 2012?

I wanted to get back to jewellery that had a vintage vibe, always adore lockets, and miniature items such as the locket books. A smidgen of mystery as to what's inside, a love token, photo or secret message.

I like Newcastle

Imagine my surprise in the supermarket, hoping the latest edition of Glamour magazine is on the stands and to be greeted by a Newcastle edition. I noticed Katy's top first, and having read the little snippets inside, this top took longer to photograph, typical eh ;) - 40 minutes to be precise, due to the replication of the Newcastle Brown ale type/logo.

This is a first for a UK publication - bespoke 8 issues featuring Bristol, Northern Ireland, Manchester, London, Scotland, Birmingham, Cymru (Wales) and finally Newcastle, thank you Glamour magazine <3
Katy's favourite top was Bristol, she loved the bow.

Inside they mention Marshall's, and fab fish and chip shop in Tynemouth. It is the favourite eating spot when my auntie comes to visit. We check out Tynemouth market, and head to Marshall's, very popular offering take-away or resturant to nibble at.

I was expecting more of a feature, but understanding with 8 features to produce big task in hand. I was very surprised the article didn't mention Attica, our best vintage store in town.

Nor, did I know that Kayne West had visited Newcastle, unfortunately kicking off at Pap's outside TupTup Palace, Hip Hop hang out, leading to his arrest.

The feature host's Newcastle fashion pages, places to eat and hang out - notably Ant and Dec's pub The Lodge. Places to shop, beauty map - track down the best places for your beauty fill. local illustrator and publisher Leonie O'Moore discusses her comic books. And last but not least 15 reasons why the North East rocks!

Is a new BBC UK film set during the 1960's at the Ford Dageham's car plant, Essex. Doesn't sound exactly thrilling does it?This isn't just the progression of the car industry, this is the fight for equal equalities, it just so happens it's in a car factory.While the rest of London is swinging through the sixties, the ladies of Ford Dagenham craft the interiors for the latest car models, in a dinging, roof leaking part of the plant.The suffragettes battled on to win ladies the vote, yet still in the 1960's it's more then likely your careers advisor's would recommended a respectable job as a secretary. But, a job is a job, and these ladies want equal pay, this is a true account of their fight.

I don't exactly get the use of bad language in the film/trailer - maybe this reflects that women are not the gentile weaklings that we are sometimes portrayed as. These gals mean business. I love the line about the Mary Quant hot pants, the fashion if nothing else is fantastic.

My Dad worked at Ford's Dagenham during the 1960's and my Mam often tells me about Newcastle in the 1960's, and The Club-a-Go-Go.

I'd loved to have visited the club, with its array of top bands and emerging artists, such as Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrick (Our local newspaper had a list of occasions throughout the cities history, and did anyone remember them. One being Jimi Hendrick busking in Heaton/ Newcastle. I can only imagine to the extreme Jimi Rocking out on a street corner, I would have loved to have seen the experience), Ike and Tina Turner, Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, and The Who to name a few. Split into two sections, one for the under 18's and then for the older crowd. Rocking out, or soaking in the rhythm and blues, in a dark, and some what dingy rooms, due to the night scene design painted on the walls. Designed by no less then Eric Burden of The Animals, and later famed for their songs The House Of The Rising Sun, We gotta get out of this place etc.

Here Eric describes the clubs early days.

MH: What are your memories of playing the Club a Go-Go?

Eric: As soon as I finished my art studies, I was offered the job of designing the interior of a club project. It became the Club a Go-Go. It was my first and only job as a designer in the commercial world. The Club a Go-Go was a shining star of the northern British club world, which meant it also had to be a den of iniquity. It’s where the North East mob was born – they ran several clubs in the area. It was a mixture of teen heaven, with the devil running loose wielding a hatchet. It was the only place outside of one club in London that actually had a full-on gaming licence. It was very clear that the mob from London would take interest, as gaming back then was strictly controlled in England and only one club in London’s West End had been allowed the game of roulette. I have many great memories from Club A Go-Go. I remember when the late John Lee Hooker played there, he said to me: ‘Man, I’ve seen some wild stuff in my years but nothing like this. I recently bought my Mam for her birthday, a book about Newcastle during the 1960's, she loved the trip down memory lane, joining her, with a little sadness for the Newcastle it had once been, and for the Newcastle it could have been. The central library, and the club-ago-go, just two of many buildings, was knocked down to make way for the 1960's new building. Only to have been replaced once again. To see the old photos, a fantastic building, proud of it's heritage, sadly the powers that be weren't. It had oozed with history. Now a new state of the arts building resides in it's spot, a hub of learning. What is that more important, the interiors and architecture or the possibility of learning? I think I'd agree on both, but I'd like not of had our history removed so freely for progression. It is also the people that make a city, they carry the news and teachings beyond the shell of any building. Where was our say?

And, so soaking up the club-a-go-go's place in time, is The Animals track of the same name. Hadn't heard this in years, and only since discovering this on Youtube, realised that this has been sampled on Girls Alouds Biology. Probably answers why I secretly like their tune ;)

Pinkies crossed I'll be off to Dagenham via the cinema soon, wonder if it's equal pay on cinema tickets, to for this movie. ;)

Wor gunna Whitley Bay.

Whitley Bay beach, this afternoon. In the distance is St.Mary's light house.

We have had family visiting, some even brave enough to dip their toes in the icy water :)

Back in it's hay-day Whitley Bay was a popular visitor's attraction, you would be lucky to see a stretch of sand, as beach combers, sunbathers, and paddlers took a prime spot on the sands. The Spanish city building - seen in the photo below with it's domed roof is currently under restoration after many years of disrepair. Once a thriving amusement park, it was the place to be for any child, and big kid. Years later, from when I was small, I remember the pirate ship and various stalls. Sadly, the numbers of visitors have dwindled, but plans to restore The Spanish City are in full swing, possibly being made into flats - while retaining the original shop properties.

Paper chase, I'd gladly curl up amongst the notebooks and pens, to doodle all day, and scribble day dreams. But, most likely be thrown out for creasing the merchandise ;) Do you think I could train and be a black belt in origami? any teacher's out there?

I don't know what it is about pens, collecting random new editions. In the words of Pauline from "The League of Gentlemen" - Pens are friends!

I worked with someone that chewed the top of pens. Have you had the misfortune of picking up a pen, without realizing has been someone else's snack? I remember a giant poster, I think by Biro, of a chewed pen not far from work. I giggled to myself wondering if they had seen it - as it phrase read "You are what you eat".

I'm a sucker for stationery too. The possibility of doodles and writing. Or realistically, not being able to think of something to write on that crisp new page, not wanting to spoil it. Did anyone else love the first page of their excersize book at school?. New possibilities & learning.

I adore the Kawaii Japanese stationary, again admire the illustrations, preserve it rather then use it. Do you have any favourite stationary designers?

Just Between Us Journal

Bedside Dream Journal

I thought this was a nice idea, I know in the past i've scrambled around on my beside desk, after a pen to write down a idea, or dream.

How do you journal? A few lines a day, or maybe just journalling about a big event, rather then day to day. I have to admit I always sent out with the best intentions of scribbling a few lines about my day. And then that phases out, and I always regret not keeping up to date, as I have a memory like a sieve with regards to day,to day events. I couldn't tell you what I was doing last Wednesday that's for sure.

Maybe I need to invest in this journal, good excuse? ;)

The Hooisers - Stop Giving Me Choices

This has to be one of my favourite tunes at the moment. I love The Hoosiers past hits - Worried about Ray & Goodbye Mr A, but I have to confess I didn't even realize that this song was by The Hoosiers. I was sucked in with it's 80's synthesizers and wacky video, though still wondering about plot choice the traditional Chinese costumes are stunning.
Anyone want to try doing a back flip with a synthesizer to?

Adventures of rummaging.

So, I was in two minds whether to attend the local church (Image source) fair nearest to work on Saturday - a beautiful church, who adorns the trees in the grounds with magical fairy lights at Christmas, truly stunning. I think with society today, it is important to support not only local businesses, but other branches of the community. One church where I live, and the venue of my parents wedding, was sadly re-veloped into flats. Keeping the main turret, I have to say they did do a lovely job, but a part of history has been chipped away.The reason I was in two minds, as whether to attend the fair, it means the ultimate indulgences, imagine the church pues lined up with books, tables set up with bric-a-brac, home made cake goodies, the hustle and bustle of chit chat and bargain hunting. I can not leave a fair without at least getting my beady eye on something, and that's my trouble - knick knack hoarder, bookaholic, charity shop rummager. For the last fair I came back with 15 books, much to my Dad's horror, only because he knows I have so many already, the quest to transform the spare room continues to store the books in boxes. Once again, my arms I'm sure are that little bit longer, I think I may have to compare them with Stretch Armstrong ;)

My little check list for fairs & car boot sales.

Always take a strong bag, not to big as I find people bash into you, and I get nervous at the thought of breaking something - not always do the stalls have plastic bags, or they run out. Take as many smaller bags as you can, ideal for wrapping - seperating goodies. And some bubble wrap, newspaper for more breakable items.
Take plenty of change - the smaller the better. A firmed by a man at the church fair, who was delighted to have change for the collection - and mentioned their is nothing worse then someone having a £20.00 note. Seriously who takes a £20 to a fair?
I'd never haggle at a church fair, though it maybe more expected at a car boot sale. Within reason - I witnessed once at a car boot sale, a lady not prepared to pay £2.00 for a lovely brooch, and the stall holder reducing it, which she still didn't buy - it was more the attitude that kind of disgusted me. And haggling over reasonably priced items I think of as kind of rude. Theirs getting a bargain, and then just trying to rob the stall holder right in front of their own eyes.
Be prepared to rummage - it can seem a bit awkward just getting stuck into delving into someone else items. Just rummage with respect, don't send the items flying lol. Everyone's out to buy, and the stall holders are egger to sell.
If you do want to have a go at haggling, my Dad taught me some lessons. Ask what is the stall holders best price, think of the situation as a bit of banter, maybe ask would say £10 pounds buy the item, don't push by saying will you take such and such, It can get peoples backs up and they won't be prepared to deal. Think what would make you comfortable in asking for a deal.

I topped my record this time - 17 books. And another few knick knacks.

I think my heart will always be drawn to illustrations and the fascination of the development of children's books over the decades. Though my quest to illustrate for children's books as taken a back seat, seeing illustrations of other artists, especially older examples will hopefully ignite that passion to create - I hope.

I had to take these photos quickly - laid out on the shop floor. I hope you can see the detail of the illustrations I have selected.

I arrived at the fair 15 minutes after 10am - opening at 10am I feared that the dealers would have gotten the best selection of the books. One duo, then sells them on at the Tynemouth market. I was thinking I wouldn't be able to find anything interesting - special. And then I found these beautiful books.

The World of the Children's books are Volume 1 & 3 - wonder where no.2 went to?

The Gift book for Children has to be my favourite of the discoveries. The illustration style I recalled, but could place a name.

Some detective work later, I discovered the artist is Anne Anderson, born in Scotland in 1874, her parents then moved to Argentina where she spent her childhood.

In 1912 she married a painter, Alan Wright. I read one one site about the couples collaboration for children's books. Alan would concentrate on drawing the animals and birds. And Anne would illustrate the figures etc.

Compared to her contemporaries - Mabel Lucie Atwell, Charles Robinson etc. Atwell is another of my favourites.

One aspect of collecting books, it makes me sad to see that dedicated books have been given away. Maybe I'm sentimental, even if I didn't like the book, I would still keep it as it had been a gift.

I adore these quirky Edward Lear illustrated Nonsense Rhymes. My favourite is in the right hand bottom corner - the person from Dutton - who's head was as small as a button...

The illustrations are quite sinister, don't you think children's books these days are quite tame?

The Mouse House - I couldn't resist this adorable small book. Complete with flaps, and sweet illustrations.

Ladybird books were always a favourite, now inspiring a range of stationary and keepsakes. One ladybird notebook I filled with messages, images as a leaving gift for a friend. Everyone rallied around to add interesting drawings, messages.

The Ugly Duckling book - is similar illustrations to a book I have from being a kid, complete with early scribbles and doodles :/

Now is it just me, or is Pat a busy girl? Seriously! o.O

I love this for capturing the toys of the 70's. Sindy, and that Action Man my brother must of had, as I ended up with the shirt for my Ken Doll. Basil Brush - boom boom!, Darlics - anyone wanting to go back in time to this toy shop to?

Now for the serious books ;) Art Nouveau is one of my favourite art movements, so snapped that one up straight away without even really browsing the pages. The 50's book I saw a man actually holding with his stash of books, "Oh how I wished I'd seen that first", I said to myself in my mind.

That's another aspect of fair/car boot rummaging.

Thankfully by some form of magic, or mind powers - Spotted the book back on a pue. Yay! The other books will fill my quest for historical and fact finding interests.

Now, for something completely different....

Designed by the firm Alfred Meakin Ltd who set up in 1875. A 1950's design - Midnight Star, my Mam said the bowl was probably a fruit bowl, part of a set. The top photo doesn't do it justice - it pure jet black with gold star burst design - slightly worn, but still visable. A bargain of 50 pence, though it does have a slight chip, I think I can easily colour that in. I'll try and take a photo once I've cleaned the bowl - love cleaning the items - bring on the sparkles!

Ok, ok, I know your probably think tat ha ha! But, I thought they were cute, maybe add them to a plant pot. I think they are maybe late 50's-60's pixies. I can't wait to give them a scrub up and remove that dust. 30 pence each.

My Mam said the figure was nice, but when I asked her did she think the ballerina was a bit tacky, she replied "Yes, just a bit" :o And I was going to give it to her for Christmas.....just kidding ;). I know the figure is know Royal Doulton lady, but cute enough.

I've got my eye on that turquoise blue, my favourite colour - just looking on the site, the shade is called Poseidon. Just discovered this in my bulk email, I thought I should make a post at least this week. ;) I quite like the amethyst beside the blue - and over on the left - same position as the blue - dusky pink with a shimmer of gold - the site names it as Citrus? - I guess it has a tropical coral element to it?. I have enough red nail varnish to last me a life time ;)

I thought i'd post up some videos I've spotted - something a bit different - quirkyish. Though the first video by the Editors crosses over the line to a tad disturbing, I can't help but think is Big Brother
watching me, yikes! It is not only the subject matter, but the use of animation possibly? This ain't know Disney. Maybe that could be refreshing? The long nosed creature reminds me of the freaky penis nose mask discovering, for my wacky souvenir post.

One of my favourite books i'm hoarding, is a children's book, a tale of mice - a pop up book by David Pelham: A Piece Of Cake. The exterior is shaped like a slice of cake. How could you not be tempted? he ;) Beautifully illustrated, and designed, my piece of treasure that I picked up at Tynemouth Market. I was very surprised the lady only wanted one pound for it.

The image of "The Girl With A Pearl Earring" Is probably one of Johannes Vermeer's most well know paintings. His life, mixed with fictional circumstances comes to life via the book & film of the same title, Have you seen the film? starring Scarlett Johansson & Colin Firth, or read the book?. I felt a sadness after watching it, and after a few other of Scarlett's films, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Island, Lost in Translation... It's uncanny how near to the original sitter Scarlett resemblance is. I think it's on the DVD, the cast visiting the original, and even Scarlett was taken a back.
I have the book, lurking on a pile and I had flicked through, leading to ultimate no-no - I read the last few pages!!! :o I'm bad like that - sometimes ;). All though based on fiction, written by Tracy Chevalier, changes have occurred. But aren't we used to that by now, in the process of a book transferred to film?

The above image may just look like a black and white replica of the original. But have a guess as to what medium is has been created it? I feel like I should say, answers on a postcard to..he he.....

One of my favourite elements of the film is the music - Griet's Theme, by the French Composer Alexandre Desplat, his more recent work is featured on New Moon, Fantastic Mr Fox and previous work for The Golden Compass, and to be released Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and many more. Although I feel the music would be more at home for a fantasy film, it's enchanting musical journey, an element of sadness, a journey.

Now, about that painting - all though undated wikipedia have a reference of 1665, the original is oil on canvas. But, what of the above image? Paint, charcoal, chalk, pastels, pencil, ink?

If you were thinking ink, then you would be right. Not drawing ink, but your regular BiC Cristal pen to be exact. I couldn't believe how the shading was created. To be honest I'm not easy impressed, but this is a true skill, a skill that made this image a proccess of 90 hours. Cue music from Hartbeat kids TV show, remember that? loved it.

I'm on a mission, collecting postcards to send my lil niece, Jolly Postman I shall be. I'm thrilled she loves that book to, always an inspiration to me. The Alhbergs created some wonderful books.

So, it got me thinking, I love collecting souvenirs, and sadly the decline of the seaside shoppe is evident. Not that I especially need a bucket and spade for seaside adventures, but I feel a part of your childhood memories fade. The familiar sight of a cue for ice creams, or stick of rock. Hurts clasps the 80's New Wave vibe I love so much, I need to find a synthesizer! Singer Theo does have a smidgen, of Matt Goss of Bros about him, what do you think?.

I love this track, though as ballerina 141 takes to her routine, I can't help but cringe at her very delicate, and possibly starved body.

And how I wish to twirl in a black ballerina costume, adding red sparkly ballerina slippers, dancing down high streets, twirling around lamp posts, shimmying through a flock of pigeons, or should that be seagulls ;), trapped in a gray tinged world.

When ever I venture out and about, I love to keep a little memento/souvenir of that day/trip. You know how much I love my knick knacks, but the souvenir can take any form, shape, material. I have a few over spilling memory boxes, you know for those days you might actually use the items for say, a journal/album. It's on my to do list, can't tell you what number it is though ;)
Here are some lovely envelopes and invites that I discovered at Tynemouth Market. Saturday is usually a day for more antique/vintage objects and paraphernalia. Sunday brings a mixture of collectables and second-hand CD's etc.
I first spotted the ephemera on a trip to the market with my auntie. I loved them instantly, and was fascinated that a few of the invites had made it through the post. Another passion of mine, is miniatures, so they ticked the boxes on my collecting list :). I expected them to be more then they actually were, I meant to go back and seek them out, but totally forgot, and regretted my decision.
The following Saturday I returned, searching for the stall, and feeling disappointed when I couldn't find it. I must have walked completely by the stall or totally oblivious to the box containing the envelopes, the stalls position had changed only by a few pitches down the row. The saying "can't see for looking" kind of smacks me in the face right about then.
It turns out that the envelopes were only each £1.50 - yes, I did kick myself! and, finding that one of the envelopes, stamped and complete with hand written address, had left the collection, luckily one remanded. I couldn't bare to leave any behind, I asked how much for the set, luckily I had enough, and a little bit more to buy some other items of ephemera from another stall. It truly made my day to have these in my collection. It was also interesting to find a family surname on one of the invitations to.

I bought the needles pouch, as some where along the lines of your family history & tales, it's been said Flora MacDonald is a descendent of the family. I love researching the family tree. Sadly I wish I'd spoken more to my Grandma about her side of the family.

I love this illustration, from Googles celebrations of J.M.Barries 150th birthday, a 150 years can you believe it?. I have to be honest and say I haven't read a full copy of Peter Pan, only snippets, one of those classics you think you'll get around to reading eventually. I know a copy is lurking, along with the follow up book "Peter Pan in Scarlet" in those poor boxes of books, patiently waiting for a beloved bookshelf.

My first memories are of the Disney cartoon, and a wonderful production starring Bonnie Langford as Peter Pan (Photo: that is one move I do not remember, lol.), at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. Continuing to love the film "Hook", my favourite scene is of the lost boys, sitting down with the aged Peter Pan (Robin Williams) preparing to feast upon their banquet. Only for Peter to question tink and the boys, as only bowls and cups lay on the table empty, not a scrap of food in sight. I didn't really want to delve to much into Barrie's life with this post, the aftermath of the book and how it influenced, effected the lives of Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family depicted in the film "Finding Neverland" and more of the reality for the children in later life. A wonderful film, with hope for any writer/artist to prevail and keep trying. You can have as many encouraging friends and family, but it takes one person to truly put their whole faith, and experience in your hands, to make your idea a reality.

What I truly want to remember is the imagination, and a creation of a wonderful story that will continue to live on and inspire. The ultimate "Happy Thought"

Seaton Delaval Hall

Newly opened to the public, I ventured to the Hall with family on bank holiday Monday. Eager to explore the hall, it's history, ghost and all.

I remember as a kid, my brother telling me of a ghost as we drove past, and we gazed up the long lawn/drive to the hall. I learned that the ghost is called "the Grey Lady" from a kid that passed us on the stairs, only for the boy to be disappointed that the Grey Lady wasn't a permanent fixture.

The Hall, having being ravaged by fire early on, the scars are still present. Two levels of flooring are missing, and the aftermath still present in the chard relics and statues that greet you as you enter.

Seaton Delaval Hall is an English baroque house, built between 1718 and 1728 for Admiral George Delaval. The house is regarded as the finest example of design by Sir John Vanbrugh; who also built Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard. Of particular note are the Coach House with a collection of interesting vehicles ( we never saw those?) and a restored Ice House.

The gardens were designed in 1947 by James Russell and have been enhanced by Lady Hastings. A walk around the ground reveals statues; topiary; a pool and fountain and is a relaxing and pleasant way to spend an hour or so.

A few of the rooms structure has miniature rooms appointed at the corners of the building. I loved them, I could just imagine the lady of the house, taking her morning tea whilst gazing upon the gardens.

The up keep of the hall is an ongoing process. Another wing of the building is set yo open in July. I think this photo was the interior of the house keepers room, a place for the lady servants and any servants of visiting guests would meet.

Note the date, dating back to 1755, Lord Delavals safe that could only be opened via the access to the stewards day room.

I can just imagine the Grey Lady causing mischief in the damp, and cold cellars, whilst visitors prowl around.

The smell was that of earthy/sea salt smell is the best way I can describe it. The Hall does over look out on to the sea in the distance, maybe that explains the smell a little.

These are not the original stair banister frames. The hall continued to be used by the family right up until it was sold, and the National Trust stepped in to save the day. You couldn't actually take photos within the family wing, lovely paintings, linen under clothes, etc on display. One section of the stairs was incomplete in the main hall (above) and having seen the original railings, even when they were first installed, looked delicate and refined. I'm not sure I would have been brave enough to use them even in the hay day of the Hall. One snap and you'd be a goner!

Hexham Abbey

A little while ago I ventured with my Dad to Hexham, after the carboot sale we sometimes attend wasn't on as usual. Later finding out a machinery sale had been organised.

And so, exploring we did go....

I had been to Hexham quite a few times over the years, but never ventured inside the abbey. The stained glass took my breath away, totally in awe of such beautifully crafted depictions from the bible.

The stained glass below is my favourite. A lover of bold blue tones, I think this is part of the reason, of why I love this scene of Jesus and his disciple's.

The below image sums up my last experience of the abbey. On entering I had looked for a no flash sign, having worked with paintings/drawings/art related objects, I know only to well the damage that light & camera flash can cause. And so visually soaking in the atmosphere, I didn't see the symbols right at the bottom of the information board. One of the example drilled into us at college, when our assignment was to produce a leaflet for a gallery - accessibility/symbols are just as important as the information. Only to be told as upon my last photo, the limits of not using the flash. I can understand totally, but I had been around the entire abbey, only to be told on us nearly leaving. I won't lie it did put a dampener on the experience, but I totally understood.

Hexham Abbey is a place of Christian worship dedicated to St Andrew and located in the town of Hexham, Northumberland, in northeast England. Since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, the Abbey has been the parish church of Hexham.

There has been a church on the site for over 1300 years since Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria made a grant of lands to Wilfrid, Bishop of York c.674. Of Wilfrid's Benedictineabbey, which was constructed almost entirely of material salvaged from nearby Roman ruins, the Saxon crypt still remains; as does a frith stool, a 7th/8th century cathedra or throne.[1] For a little while around that time it was the seat of a bishopric.

In the year 875 Halfdene the Dane ravaged the whole of Tyneside and Hexham Church was plundered and burnt to the ground.[2]

About 1050 one Eilaf was put in charge of Hexham, although as treasurer of Durham, he probably never came there. Eilaf was instructed to rebuild Hexham Church which then lay in utter ruin. His son Eilaf II completed the work probably building in the Norman style.[2]

In Norman times, Wilfrid's abbey was replaced by an Augustinian priory. The current church largely dates from that period (c.1170–1250), in the Early English style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period.

The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The Abbey was largely rebuilt during the incumbency of Canon Edwin Sidney Savage who came to Hexham in 1898 and remained until 1919. This mammoth project involved re-building the nave, whose walls incorporate some of the earlier church and the restoration of the choir. The nave was re-consecrated on August 8, 1908.

In 1996 an additional chapel was created at the east end of the north choir aisle. Named St Wilfrid's Chapel, it offers a place for prayer or quiet reflection.

I'm on the hunt for a book, which I have vague memories of, great start, huh? lol. I think, based on Christmas during the Second World War, a children's book with wonderful illustrations, and additional envelopes with letters, keepsakes etc. If you know this book, I'd love you forever!
I love those books, the concept of interactive, but with an innovate and artistic element, something as simple as an envelope with a twist.
Ever since I read "the Jolly Postman" as a child I was smitten with the work of Allan & Janet Ahlberg. It wasn't until becoming an adult that I bought my own copy, I have always been enthralled by Janet's detail, and style of illustration. Luckily, a few years ago I got the chance to see Janet's work. Totally exquisite, inspiring and such treasured memories of the Ahlbergs books.
Here are some of my favourites, which I look forward to buying, over the coming years for my niece as she grows up.

The Jolly Postman delivers his letters to classic fairy tale characters, such as Three Bears, Cinderella, Goldilocks with her "Sorry" letter to the Three Bears.

Pages of the book become actual envelopes, read along with characters, discover what they have been sent, indulge in the wonderful illustrations and innovative ideas. I'm sure this book will continue to be adored and influence for many more years to come.

Just discovered these postage stamps for the Isle of Man - I'd love these for my collection.

I love Mrs Wobble, from the Happy families series. Which went on to the TV production for BBC. I was reading this for a group story time, slight disaster really as the pages are quite small. I think I was the only one wobbling o.O.

It's interesting what you discover, whilst looking for something completely different, and a tad disctracted. I hope you like these discoveries to.

Being a kid, myself and my brother hand numerous catchphrases. I bet you did to? Maybe they only lasted a day, a week or inspired you to put on a show, comedy sketch, or just wet yourself silly.
Brother Vs Sister: How ever well I got on with my bro, on not so well, depending on what he had stolen of mine, hidden the remote etc. We always had fun making up stupid quips trying to out do each other.
I still don't know to this day where my brother heard this line. I'm thinking probably via the radio comedy shows. I really didn't expect to find this on youtube, now the mystery is solved.

Today was pretty low-key, haven't exactly been feeling to great lately, it's been a take it easy, quiet vibe of late & having some down time to re-energize.

Now spring is finally stepping into action, and the sun has got his hat on for the occasion, it's lovely to feel warmth in the air, minus an umbrella, and also to embark on days out, taking each step at your own pace.

And so today, myself, and my Dad did just that. We are on a mission to get more in shape, enjoy more adventures. So we head to the local countryside park.

We were surprised to see a stag in the grounds. He was far to in the distance to get a photo, and he moved further up the field, and we progressed more in the opposite direction. Maybe next time.

Here are some photos from today I wanted to share.

It wasn't until I enlarged the photo, that I realised the swan was looking directly at me. Just as well, as it looks a little fearsome. I promise I wasn't trying to steal it's bread.;)

All though friendly, and accepting attention, the horse seemed to have a touch of melancholy. I don't blame him for not directly taking food offerings, favouring the food dropped to the ground.

Had to do some detective work to find out what breed of bird this was. A lover on seeds and insects, this young Reed Bunting female, tucked into seeds, left on top of various fence posts. I was so happy to get this shot, where twigs, or the cheeky bird wasn't flashing it's behind. A Great Tit was also spotted, loving the offerings of seeds, definitely more of a cheeky character.

Believe it or not, that little bird is a Robin. We were just about to leave the country park trail. And two Robin's appeared. My Dad wouldn't stay still long enough, and I must have looked quite odd moving in slow motion, lol. I really wanted a photograph, so I could send the snaps to my Robin loving Auntie.

I don't know if it's me?, this week has seemed so long...

How's everyone's Friday going? It was lovely to finally feel some heat in the air today, having to turn the heating off when I got home. That lovely Friday feeling didn't stop there...
Today I got a bargain, freebie with a few pennies attached, so to speak. If you run out and buy More! magazine, this issue priced at £1.50, includes a coupon entitling you to a free GOSH Extreme art eye liner worth £7.00, not bad working out that you save £5.50. I was torn between a lilac, and a copper/bronze eye liner. I plucked for the latter, I was impressed just how resilient this product is, still have traces of the sample swatches on my hand. But, be quick, the coupon is only valid until April 12th, to redeemed at selected Superdrug shops.

Still on the subject of cosmetics, get saving as Topshop is set to launch their own Make-up range this May. Featured in the latest issue of UK Elle Magazine, May 2010. The range's packaging, is simple, with a contemporary vibe, a hint of 80's design. I already have my eye on the eye duo/trio sets. They are reasonably priced too. *Big thumbs up*

Released on April 1st, designed by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, Lancome release a new set of juicy tubes.

Stated as having their own scent, is that a good bonus? I guess it depends on the scent/flavour. This is one element of the brand - Rimmel that puts me off their lipsticks, the floral scent. Maybe Lancome can reassure me that it is possible, without a nasty after taste.

Ten years since the juicy tubes launched, and I have to admit I haven't succumb to their juicy advances. Am I truly missing out gals? If it's gloopy, and sticky then I can guarantee the moment I apply this, step out of the house, a freak gust of wind will descend and smoother my lips with my entire head of hair. "The cousin It" look was never truly in. Unless I take up a job of scaring children. Please reassure me that these juicy little creations are totally worth the pennies.

I was interested to see what other creations Yayoi Kusama has created.

Oh, who's ready to join me in this room? Reminds me of Smarties sweets. Imagine if those dots tasted of Smarties/Chocolate aka Wonka flavoured wallpaper.

Elfie shall go to the ball.....
That is if I can actually walk in these shoes. My auntie laughed as I toddled around the room, in my latest charity shop discovery. And for all I'm a fan of flats, how could I resist these? From New Look, and the bargain of £5, worn only one by the look of it. I even managed to get down the stairs, lol. Though the height/wobble concerns me, also the fact of where I'm actually going to wear these techni-coloured dream shoes. They did have a sister pair of heels on another shelf, black and gold, but I heart my jazzy discoveries.
Some other discoveries from over the last month. It's hard to resist Primark's sunglasses, I fear I have a lil obsession with sunglasses. Which is quite humorous considering I live Newcastle, which is minus sun most of the time. And please promise me, that you will come to my eyeballs funeral after wearing £1 sunglasses :P. I think i'm a fan also, because shades come to my rescue when a migraine strikes, I find i'm more sensitive to light now. Or so that's my excuse ;)

I'm not that nuts, I didn't buy these all at once, but on various trips.

I actually gasped when I saw this bag. How sad is that, lol.

A bargain of a purchase from Primark, yet again £4.

Sunglasses, yet again too. Heart sunglasses are my main weakness. A thin rim, as on these H&M sunglasses just had to come and join the collection. £4.99.

Those glasses again ;) Owl's still continue to be popular, a perfect notebook for doodles and scribblings from Paperchase £3.25. Blank pages with a small bird motif in the bottom corners.

The nail varnish is Pastel Purple, a great little bargain from Asda £1. Perfect if you want to try the new pastel trend. I didn't use a base coat/top layer as I just wanted to give it a try. Lasted 2 days, and I'm sure would have lasted more.

And last, but not least, another Primark discovery. I've always wanted a snake theme piece of jewellery, I've also got my eye on some leopard earrings or ring in New Look. Primark ring £2.00.

Off I go again, trying to resist my chocolate Easter egg calling to me. Enjoy the rest of Easter everyone <3.

I hope everyone's getting the chance to spend the Easter days with family and friends :). Welcome all new life, and the true meaning of Easter.

A few years ago, probably more actually. On a Sunday via the Sunday supplement magazine, I used to love checking out on the last page, for the work of Sloane Tanen. Every mini sketch involved those lil yellow chicks we get at Easter, with the beady black eyes. I had visions of them taking over Sloane's house, or draws full of them, stocking up her addiction via eBay.

I would snip out the sketch, you know for one of those days I might actually paste them in a journal.

They are still waiting to be pasted.

The Art of Lotte Reiniger

I'm still on the hunt for Bande a part and Polly Maggoo on DVD, it shall be mine! ;), and so by chance I stumbled upon MovieMail. An interesting site, featuring various genres and decades of film. One complilation caught my eye - Lotte Reiniger: The Fairy Tale Films. I have vague memories of shadow puppets, possibly it was Lotte's work I saw as a child.(image source)

MovieMail: Lotte Reiniger has the distinction of creating the very first feature animation, her enthralling The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), an epic silhouette film featuring highly ornate shapes of exotic lands, gallant heroes, nefarious magic, and a rousing climax with a multi-headed beast. A German leftist in the age of fascism, after the war she moved to England, where she continued to build a visionary oeuvre totalling over fifty films, mostly shorts, many of them for BBC Children’s TV. She made her last film, The Rose and the Ring (1979), at the age of 80. In addition to their craft and charm, her films have two outstanding features: they are highly intricate, yet also opaque, inviting viewers to fill in details with their own imagination, thus creating a captivating aesthetic as commanding today as ever.

One of my favourite aspects of art, is the love of detail, I can't believe that people gave the thumbs down on Youtube to the origins of animation. Simply beautiful...

Oh, the tangled web we weave, it's beautiful discoveries we meet along the way.

Yesterday, whilst searching through Blip.fm, on my ever present quest for new music, a video by Nouvelle Vague popped up. With some detective work, I discovered the footage used, is from a French New Wave film, set in the 1960's Bande à part. Nouvelle Vague's influenced titled album of the same name.

French title derives from the phrase faire bande à part, which means "to do something apart from the group." from wikipedia.

I'm a big fan of 80's music, New Wave, Electronica, Fantasy-esque. Nouvelle Vague gives a lease of new life to classic tunes, stand out examples of the genre, and thankfully know bad renditions, or amateur remakes. And such I am smitten, hunting down the albums.
Now as for the video "Dance with me", I can't help but cringe slightly at the dancing, maybe in the 60's it was considered cool, I'm expecting some dad to pop out and start dancing, as though at a wedding. But, the freedom it exudes, it's just to darn cool for words. This is defiantly added to my wish list.
If anyone has seen the film I'd love to here your thoughts,reviews.

Bande à part film information

Another French 1960's film. Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? is being added to my list. The film follows Polly, a Brooklyn born fashion model, in a spoof take on the extravagances of the fashion industry, while perused by a French TV Crew. The poster alone intrigued me, I would love to see it in a poster format.

Personally, I hate and form of manipulated body parts, I blame Monty Python for their use of animated Victorian illustrations, that for some reason give me the creeps. But, on reflection though this clip was of some interest.

If you were to ask me what is my favourite song, I couldn't answer you with a straight reply. I like to think that my favourite songs are yet to cross the sound waves, be jammed, hit the radio and TV, be a melody, turning over and over in some ones mind, waiting to be noted down in a precious tatty old note book.
It's took me many years to even to be able to choose particular songs, for all I love many genres of music, It's only of late I've been able to pin point my music influences. I love nothing more then a piece of music/song to carry me off into my own imagination, visualize places and people, fantasy worlds full of creation. And then to the extreme, the patience pushing build up of a chorus, or rocking riff. I can't bare a drawn out intro, my inner rock guitar it waiting to leap.
Mykonos by Fleet Foxes carries me away, for it's the music that speaks to me, that know lyrics could.

The Flamingos - I only have eyes for you. Their have been various versions of the song. For me this is the stand out version, talk about ambiance. Excuse me while I sup my milkshake for the local diner ;)

My favourite piece of classical music.

Maurice Ravel - Pavane pour une infante défunte.

I first heard this piece of music on a children's TV programme. The story told of a teenage girl, having being placed into foster care and it's consequences, the forms of rebellion, her punk attitude covering up the hurt that lay beneath. Being fostered didn't answer or truly resolve the past, she began to influence the daughter of the family she had been placed with. Only to find out that the foster couple, are infact her birth parents. I think this was by sheer coincidence, I've been hunting for this programme online, turning out to be a needle in a haystack. I always remembered this programme. It wasn't until a few years later I found on an LP of my Mam's, this beautiful music once again, how can such sadness be so beautiful. For when the music rises midway, I like to think that hope, is breaking through.
Another favourite, that we would play as loud as possible. Grieg - In the hall of the Mountain King. For me this invokes all creatures, and beasties, emerging from their hiddy holes, gathering friends along the way. Embarking up the mountain side, to bare witness to the mountain king, and the fabulous gathering and celebrations that were to ensue.

For once I'm glad about the extra sneak peak footage for Eclipse, exclusive to the New Moon DVD. Now that footage has gotten me interested! The trailer just didn't quite send shivers down the spine for me. I'm looking forward to Jasper's background being featured, though in the actual Eclipse book, I felt as though Stephanie, as to bulk out the book, Jasper and Rosalie's background had been an after thought filler.
The ban has begun know more snippets, sneak peaks, interviews until I've seen the film.
It's not just the Twilight saga previews, I find it hard to enjoy a film, to be blow away by the acting and technology etc, when I have previewed some of the stand out scenes of the film online.
You know how much Gif's amuse me. When it came to deciding which New Moon format/set to purchase, I would have normally went with Play.com. So much for the free gift, they had added an extra £5.00 to the price. And to be honest I wouldn't have worn the bracelet.
Asda's exclusive DVD caught my eye, my very own portable gif in some ways. This funky hologram sleeve.

Still yet to watch all the extra footage etc. What do you guy and gals think?

The dog days are over...

It's not often I find an album that I can happily play right through, without the skip button lurking.
Florence + the Machine has played none stop on my MP3 player, the release was well over due.

All for creativity, and expression, though I find this video a tad creepy. Maybe it's the bleached out face of Florence, doll like. Those dolls with teeth always gave me the creeps, especially as a kid. Once at a friends house, her older brother was watching a horror film with murdering porcelain dolls. I blame that film for my loathing of them.

It got me thinking about how the eye might fix on features, reading shadows and tone. And how we play on colours, for Florence's make up is know different from that of a geisha, just minus the rose bud lips.

What can you read into the colour white? Calm and tranquil? bland and dull? An emptiness, or ghostly figure.

A snippet of a dream, though I'm happy to view from a far, I still love this track.
